Brahms Marathon

Paired concertos and symphonies by Johannes Brahms

The work is dramatic, thoughtful, and powerful.

In the “Brahms Marathon” we will pair concertos and symphonies by Johannes Brahms. Concertos 1 and 2 and symphonies 3 and 4. Concerto No. 1 was written when Brahms was in his 20s (1858) and struggling with emotional turmoil after Schumann’s death. The work is dramatic, thoughtful and powerful. Concerto No. 2 was written 20 years later, and it reflects Brahms at the height of his power. The concerto is warm, broad and lyrical, and the piano is integrated with the ensemble and conducts a dialogue with it. The Third Symphony is lyrical, autumnal and romantic, with elements of melancholy and it ends gently in a major. The Fourth Symphony is darker, tragic and modest. This is Brahms’ most serious, explanatory and intellectual symphony, ending in E minor – a rare scale for Romantic symphonies.
